Three Date Night Rules That'll Help You Stick To Your Resolution To Spend More Time Together In 2026

A resolution to spend more time with your partner in the coming year is almost as common as a vow to finally put your health first. And that makes sense – both are things that we really want to do, but simply struggle to prioritize. Unfortunately, along with that gym subscription you only use once or twice, New Year's date night vows also tend to be the first things to slip.

Yet, couples who spend more time together are more likely to stay together in the long run, and we’d say that’s a resolution worth sticking to. Which is why we’ve set three ground rules that you should put in place if you really want to keep date nights on your radar throughout 2026.

Rule # 1 - Make it Non-Negotiable

How often do you plan a date night with your partner, only to cancel if something comes up, or the weather isn’t great? We’ve all been there, but it’s time that you stopped treating this vital quality time as a disposable priority.

In 2026, you should finally make date night a non-negotiable in both of your calendars. That means you should be planning life around these all-important events, rather than the other way around! At the start of each month, pick a date and stick to it, come rain, shine, or simply not being in the mood.

Rule # 2 - Plan in Advance

It’s much easier to bow out of vague plans, so our next rule is to always set a solid plan in place for your date nights well in advance. This doesn’t need to be anything major. Even just making a dinner booking at your favorite restaurant is going to help get you out the door.

Planning also brings the benefit of freeing you to book things that you’re actually excited to do.  For instance, instead of just rushing down the road for a quick dinner, you could book a table in that fancy place downtown that you’ve wanted to try. Equally, you could get tickets for well-reviewed theater shows or brilliant comedy shows for a night out that you’re both sure to enjoy and engage with. This, alone, could keep date night going strong for a whole lot longer!

Rule # 3 - Leave Distractions off the Table

It’s also worth noting that distractions like constant phone use are the fastest killer of effective date nights. That’s because, as well as coming between you both, ongoing technology use could easily make you feel that you might as well be at home. So, our final and perhaps most important rule is to leave distractions off the table.

Ideally, this would mean leaving your phones at home, but even if you need a point of contact for kids and so on, you should make an ongoing effort to keep tech in your pocket and out of your date night interactions!

2026 could be your year to finally put ongoing date nights on the table if you simply follow these simple rules.
